4th Of July Death: Man Des After Homemade Cannon Explodes

 
CROTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Howard City man died late Sunday night when police say he apparently was hit by shrapnel from a homemade cannon. Neighbors near Pettit Lake in Croton Township, where the explosion happened, said it followed a day of cannon fire meant to celebrate Independence Day. They said shrapnel flew more than 150 yards toward neighbors’ homes, also putting them at risk. Police identified the victim as Anthony Herman, 46. They said he was lighting a homemade cannon about 10:45 p.m. when it exploded. They believe a piece of metal shrapnel hit him in the chest.
